BACKSTAGE at the Tracy Reese show on Sunday morning, Anastasia Pavlenko, a model from Kiev, Ukraine, perched on a makeup chair and eyed me suspiciously.
Her brunet locks had been temporarily pinned up in curlers. Manicurists on either side pulled at her hands as they painted her nails a deep merlot. Photographers jostled her, heading for the dressing room. Ms. Pavlenko was accustomed to that kind of chaos during Fashion Week in New York.
But as I hovered with a makeup brush, dabbing on a second coat of under-eye concealer because the first coat I had applied was too light for her skin, Ms. Pavlenko smelled an impostor.
"Makeup artists never do same thing twice," she said in her imperfect English. "But you take something off and then put it back on. I have intuition you are new at this, right?" Right. Usually, I just write about the cosmetics industry, chronicling its new products and procedures. I rarely use makeup myself, mostly because I don't know how to apply it.
